As early as 1908, Wichitans were able to purchase a variety of automobile brands and models from at least five local dealerships, including the Wilson Automobile Company at 118 South Lawrence (now Broadway). Company associates pose in a Franklin in front of the dealership, 1908.
The Locomobile
The automobile was first introduced to Wichitans as a fad and form of recreation in 1899. Businessman A. S. Parks is credited with purchasing the first car—a two-cylinder steam Locomobile.
Construction at Douglas and Main
A ten-story building of steel and concrete was erected by Henry Schweiter at the northeast corner of Main Street and Douglas Avenue on the site of the old New York Store. Construction began in 1910 and was completed in 1911.

Mentholatum Factory
Construction began in 1908 on the new eight-thousand- square-foot Mentholatum factory of reinforced concrete at Douglas Avenue and Cleveland Street.
